Trump Calls Minnesota ICE Shooting Unfortunate Avoids Blame

Trump Calls Minnesota ICE Shooting Unfortunate Avoids Blame

Post by : Meena Ariff

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a measured reaction to the fatal shooting of a Minnesota mother by an ICE officer, calling the incident “unfortunate” and “sad to see on both sides.” His remarks marked a softer tone compared with earlier statements, which strongly defended the officer and criticized the victim.

The shooting occurred on January 7 in Minneapolis when ICE officer Jonathan Ross fired at Renee Good, a mother of three, after federal authorities were sent to the city to bolster immigration enforcement. Video footage reviewed by officials shows Ross firing the first of three shots as Good’s car moved past him.

Earlier, Trump had described Good as a “professional agitator” who allegedly ran over the ICE officer, implying the shooting was in self-defense. In his latest comments, he avoided declaring whether the officer acted correctly.

“I don’t get into right or wrong. I know that it was a tough situation to be in,” Trump said. He added that the situation highlighted a lack of respect shown to ICE officers and local law enforcement, noting, “It’s so sad to see on both sides.”

When asked if he would pardon Ross if he faced charges and was convicted, Trump said he would wait for the legal process to unfold, calling the event “very unfortunate.”

Federal agents are generally immune from state prosecution for actions performed in the line of duty, though local authorities have disputed the claim that the shooting was self-defense. Despite the controversy, Trump confirmed that ICE operations would continue in U.S. cities, arguing they are needed to combat crime, even though some operations have led to violent confrontations. ICE data shows that many individuals detained in the recent surge had no prior criminal convictions.
