President Donald Trump has unveiled an ambitious initiative to build a new series of warships named in his honor—an unusual prestige usually reserved for past U.S. leaders. The announcement took place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where prominent Pentagon and Navy officials presented visuals and specifications of these groundbreaking vessels.
Initially, the plan entails the construction of two “Trump-class” ships, though Trump hinted at the potential for a significantly expanded fleet in the future. He described them as “some of the most lethal surface warfare vessels ever created,” asserting that they would be “the largest battleships in our nation’s history.”
These ships are expected to weigh between 30,000 and 40,000 tons and will come armed with a formidable range of weaponry. This will include conventional missiles and cannons, along with cutting-edge technology under development, such as laser systems and hypersonic missiles. Trump also emphasized that the vessels will be able to carry nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles, bolstering their strategic deterrence capabilities.
While larger than the current U.S. destroyers and cruisers, the Trump-class vessels will still be somewhat smaller than the historic Iowa-class battleships, which were retired in the 1990s.
This announcement coincides with the Navy's unveiling of new frigates known as FF(X), intended to work alongside the fleet’s larger warships. The Navy anticipates the launch of its first frigate by 2028, drawing from proven designs used by the U.S. Coast Guard. However, some frigate initiatives, including the Constellation class, are currently undergoing review or may be at risk of cancellation.
These developments arrive amid heightened concerns over China’s rapid naval growth. Earlier this year, a report to Congress indicated that the U.S. is falling behind Beijing in shipbuilding speed and capability.
“We will restore America as the leading shipbuilding force,” declared Trump. “We will ensure that the United States maintains the most powerful fleet in the world, now and for decades to come, with battleships spearheading the effort.”
The introduction of the Trump-class warships signifies a major undertaking to fortify U.S. naval supremacy with state-of-the-art technology and firepower, highlighting a recommitment to strengthening military shipbuilding and ensuring global maritime leadership.
