WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has formally launched his new global initiative, the “Board of Peace,” bringing together around two dozen world leaders and senior officials in Washington. The new body is primarily focused on advancing progress in Gaza, following a ceasefire brokered by the United States with support from Qatar and Egypt, but its ambitions extend to other global conflict zones as well.
The meeting comes as the ceasefire in Gaza enters a second phase, with the United States pushing for the disarmament of Hamas. US officials say pressure is mounting on the group to give up weapons, while Israel has called for strict measures to remove arms. Despite the truce, Gaza authorities report continued casualties, underlining the fragile nature of the situation.
Trump is expected to announce financial pledges exceeding US$5 billion for Gaza’s reconstruction, where much of the infrastructure has been destroyed by years of conflict. Discussions are also underway on forming an International Stabilization Force to maintain security in the territory. Prabowo Subianto has indicated Indonesia’s willingness to contribute thousands of troops if such a force is approved.
The Board of Peace has drawn criticism and skepticism, particularly from traditional US allies. Many European democracies, including France and Canada, have not joined the initiative, while others such as the European Union and Italy are participating only as observers. Critics argue the structure gives Trump sweeping control, including veto power, and question how it differs from existing international mechanisms.
Despite the controversy, the Trump administration says the Board of Peace could eventually address other global hotspots beyond Gaza. Supporters see it as a bold attempt to reshape conflict resolution, while opponents warn it risks sidelining established institutions like the United Nations and deepening divisions in global diplomacy.
