Tom Steyer's Groundbreaking $195M Ad Campaign for California Governor

Tom Steyer's Groundbreaking $195M Ad Campaign for California Governor

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Billionaire and Democratic candidate Tom Steyer has initiated the priciest advertising campaign seen in United States politics this year as he vies for the governorship of California.

As reported by advertising monitoring service AdImpact, Steyer's spending has surpassed $195 million on television, radio, digital platforms, and cable ads, with figures expected to rise as the June 2 primary approaches.

A former hedge fund manager and liberal champion, Steyer is using his massive personal wealth to fund his campaign. His ad expenditures dwarf those of his nearest Democratic opponent, Xavier Becerra, by more than 20 times.

Comparatively, no other candidate nationwide has come close to matching Steyer's financial clout in their campaigns. In Georgia, Republican Rick Jackson has spent approximately $83 million in his gubernatorial primary, while Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has invested nearly $31 million.

Indeed, Steyer's unprecedented spending has attracted criticism from opponents who allege he is attempting to purchase the governorship. Former U.S. Representative Katie Porter pointed out the disparity, questioning the need for such massive spending to secure the position.

Steyer's spending has set new records in California's political landscape, outpacing the $178.5 million spent by Republican Meg Whitman during her unsuccessful 2010 gubernatorial run, which was once touted as the most expensive campaign in the state.

Despite pouring immense resources into his campaign, Steyer has yet to establish a commanding lead in the race. Current polls indicate a competitive battle involving several key candidates, including Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton.

Steyer's financial backing ensures a steady exposure across television, radio, YouTube, Instagram, and various online channels. His campaign has even reportedly funded a progressive social media influencer from Texas with $100,000 to bolster his online presence.

In the meantime, Becerra has attempted to counter Steyer's overwhelming advertising blitz with his own targeted campaigns that highlight voter fatigue due to the incessant ads, even running a spot urging voters to "end the Tom Steyer ad cycle" by supporting him.

The governor's race in California features an extensive field with over 50 candidates slated to appear on a single ballot due to the state's "top two" primary system. The top two candidates with the most votes are set to advance to the November elections, irrespective of their party affiliations.

Political analysts suggest that Steyer's financial prowess could still sway the outcome in this tightly contested race. As Democratic consultant Andrew Acosta points out, in a competitive environment, every edge is crucial.

Nevertheless, historical trends indicate that hefty campaign spending does not always guarantee electoral success. For instance, billionaire Rick Caruso poured over $100 million into the 2022 Los Angeles mayoral election yet lost to Karen Bass. Similarly, former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg invested more than $1 billion in his 2020 presidential campaign but withdrew early.

Steyer himself did not achieve much traction during his previous 2020 presidential bid, despite significant financial backing.

The ongoing California governor race unfolds against a backdrop of pressing issues, including homelessness, soaring housing costs, wildfire insurance concerns, state budget challenges, and rising expenses for groceries, fuel, and utilities.

Steyer, who has never held an elected office, defended his spending in an earlier interview, insisting he would not apologize for achieving success in business and asserting that money alone cannot secure electoral victories.
