Thailand is accelerating its transformation into a regional hub for smart and green mobility through major partnerships with leading electric vehicle manufacturers and technology companies from China, Japan, and Europe. The Board of Investment (BOI) recently hosted the “Thailand Driving Toward Smart and Green Mobility” symposium during SUBCON Thailand 2026 in Bangkok, bringing together global automotive leaders, investors, and industry experts to discuss the future of the EV industry and advanced automotive technology.
The symposium attracted more than 500 participants, including executives from China EV100, BYD, Bosch, Isuzu, Autoliv, and other major automotive and technology companies. The event focused on the global transition toward electric vehicles, smart transportation systems, clean energy solutions, and advanced automotive technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous driving systems, and digital mobility platforms.
BOI Secretary-General Narut Teodsathirasak stated that Thailand is no longer simply following global automotive trends but is actively shaping the future of the industry in Southeast Asia. He explained that the automotive sector is entering the ACES era, which includes Autonomous, Connected, Electric, and Shared Mobility technologies. According to him, software systems, battery management technology, electronics, and intelligent driving systems are becoming the core drivers of competitiveness in the modern automotive industry.
Thailand’s government has continued to support investment in electric vehicles and related industries to strengthen the country’s energy security and long-term economic resilience. Officials revealed that from 2017 to March 2026, applications for investment promotion in the EV industry exceeded 182 billion baht. These investments cover electric vehicle manufacturing, battery production, charging stations, and advanced automotive components, reinforcing Thailand’s growing reputation as a major EV production hub in ASEAN.
Industry leaders at the symposium highlighted the importance of building a complete EV ecosystem in Thailand. Experts emphasized that the country must continue expanding charging infrastructure, modernizing production systems, improving clean energy usage, and developing highly skilled workers to support the next phase of automotive transformation. Several executives also stressed the need for stronger collaboration between technology companies, energy providers, and automotive manufacturers.
Representatives from BYD Auto Thailand noted that rising energy prices and global fuel concerns are accelerating Thailand’s shift toward electric mobility. The company encouraged the Thai government to continue supporting Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), as they help local parts manufacturers adapt more smoothly to new technologies while maintaining the strength of Thailand’s automotive supply chain.
Executives from Bosch and Autoliv explained that software, electronics, artificial intelligence, and smart safety systems are rapidly changing the automotive sector worldwide. They noted that Thailand already has strong manufacturing capabilities and a well-developed supplier network, but further investment in advanced technology and innovation will be necessary to maintain competitiveness in the global market.
China EV100 President Zhang Yongwei predicted that by 2030, electric vehicles could account for nearly 45 percent of global vehicle sales. He described EVs as more than transportation tools, explaining that they are evolving into technology platforms that combine artificial intelligence, clean energy, digital services, and connected mobility systems. He added that international cooperation in battery technology, semiconductors, autonomous driving, and software development will shape the future of the automotive industry.
Thailand’s government believes that smart and green mobility will play a key role in supporting sustainable economic growth, energy stability, and environmental protection. Officials also stated that the country aims to become a comprehensive manufacturing center for future vehicles while helping Thai businesses integrate more strongly into global supply chains over the next decade.
