Thailand Says Too Soon to Predict China Tourism Rebound in 2026

Thailand Says Too Soon to Predict China Tourism Rebound in 2026

Post by : Shakul

Bangkok, Thailand — Thailand’s Tourism Authority (TAT) is urging caution over expectations of a strong rebound in Chinese tourist arrivals, saying it’s too early to declare a full recovery even though early 2026 data shows modest growth in visitor numbers from China. Officials say they will wait until key holiday periods later in the year — such as the Labour Day holidays in May — before assessing whether demand has stabilised.

Chinese Arrivals Show Early Signs of Growth

Official figures show that Chinese tourist arrivals rose slightly by 0.3% year‑on‑year through February 23, 2026, with nearly 1.08 million visitors reported for the first two months of the year — a 4.5% increase compared to the same period last year, driven in part by additional airline seat capacity and promotional campaigns.

During the Chinese New Year peak travel season, data from independent trackers also suggests that Chinese travellers accounted for about 23% of inbound visitors to Thailand, underscoring the market’s ongoing importance to the tourism sector.

Cautious Industry Outlook

Despite this early momentum, TAT officials say they prefer to monitor arrivals through the May holiday season before drawing firm conclusions on recovery trends, noting that travel demand from China has historically been tied closely to long holiday periods.

The Thai tourism sector continues to focus on safety messaging and targeted promotions to reassure potential visitors, while competitors in Southeast Asia — including Malaysia, Vietnam and South Korea — are also making headway in attracting international tourists
