A new technology-focused political movement is gaining attention in Japan, as the emerging party Team Mirai pushes a vision of “digital democracy” powered by artificial intelligence and advanced technology.
The party was founded in 2025 by AI engineer and entrepreneur Takahiro Anno, who aims to modernize Japan’s political system and improve public services through digital innovation. The word “Mirai” means “future” in Japanese, reflecting the party’s goal of building a technology-driven governance model.
Team Mirai gained national attention during the 2026 parliamentary elections after winning 11 seats in Japan’s lower house of parliament. The party secured nearly 4 million votes, representing about 6.9 percent of the total ballots cast, marking a rapid rise from having no representation previously.
Anno, a graduate of the engineering faculty at the University of Tokyo, previously worked at a global consulting firm before launching several artificial intelligence startups. His background in technology and entrepreneurship shapes the party’s focus on digital governance, artificial intelligence, robotics and innovation-led economic growth.
Team Mirai advocates large-scale investments in advanced technologies such as AI, autonomous vehicles, robotics and research institutions. The party argues that these sectors could create a new cycle of economic growth and help Japan address long-term challenges such as an aging population and labor shortages.
One of the party’s key initiatives is an open digital platform designed to gather public feedback on government policies using AI tools. The system allows citizens to share ideas and discuss political issues online, enabling policymakers to analyze large-scale public input before drafting legislation.
According to Anno, technology could also increase transparency in government decision-making and help track parliamentary bills and political funding more efficiently. He believes such digital tools could restore public trust in politics and make government more responsive to citizens.
The rise of Team Mirai comes as Sanae Takaichi and her ruling coalition continue to prioritize artificial intelligence and digital transformation as part of Japan’s national strategy for economic growth.
Analysts say the party’s rapid growth reflects increasing public interest in technology-driven solutions to economic and social challenges. If its policies gain broader support, Japan could become one of the first countries to experiment with large-scale AI-assisted democratic governance.
