7.8M Face Hunger Crisis in South Sudan Now

Post by : Shakul

A severe humanitarian crisis is unfolding in South Sudan, where millions of people are facing extreme hunger. According to a new report by international organizations, around 7.8 million people are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity between April and July 2026.

The report, released by the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Programme, and UNICEF, highlights that this number represents about 56 percent of the country’s total population. It is considered one of the most severe hunger crises in the world today.

Among those affected, more than 73,000 people are facing catastrophic levels of hunger, which is the most critical stage in the global food security classification system. This number has increased sharply compared to previous estimates, raising serious concerns among humanitarian agencies.

In addition, about 2.5 million people are currently in the emergency phase, while 5.3 million are struggling in the crisis phase. These classifications reflect different levels of food shortage and the urgent need for assistance.

Experts say the crisis is driven by multiple factors, including ongoing conflict, large-scale displacement of people, and economic instability. These conditions have made it difficult for families to access food and basic necessities.

Climate-related challenges such as floods and irregular weather patterns have further worsened the situation. Agricultural production has declined significantly, reducing food supply and increasing dependence on aid.

Humanitarian organizations have warned that without immediate intervention, the situation could deteriorate further. They are calling for increased international support to provide food, healthcare, and essential services to affected communities.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification system, used in the report, is a global standard for measuring hunger levels. It helps governments and organizations understand the severity of food insecurity and respond accordingly.

Officials stress that urgent action is needed to prevent the crisis from turning into a full-scale famine. The situation in South Sudan highlights the growing challenges of food security in conflict-affected regions.
