Several ferry operators running routes between Singapore and Batam have introduced a fuel surcharge following a surge in global energy prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.
Operators including Horizon Fast Ferry, Majestic Fast Ferry and Batam Fast Ferry announced that passengers departing from Singapore to Batam will have to pay an additional S$6 fuel surcharge starting March 12.
According to ferry operators, the surcharge is necessary to offset rising fuel costs and maintain safe and reliable services. The fee will apply to all passengers travelling from Singapore, including those who purchased tickets before the surcharge was introduced. The additional payment will be collected at ticket counters before boarding.
Batam Fast Ferry also said passengers travelling on other regional routes will face additional charges, including S$12 for trips to Desaru Coast in Malaysia and S$6 for routes to Pengelih.
Energy prices have surged in recent weeks due to geopolitical tensions affecting shipping routes in the Middle East. The disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy corridor through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes, has increased concerns about fuel shortages and rising transportation costs.
Global oil benchmarks have also climbed sharply, with Brent crude prices crossing the US$100 per barrel mark, reflecting fears of supply disruptions and increased shipping risks in the region.
Analysts say rising fuel costs are likely to affect multiple sectors including aviation, shipping and public transport across Asia. Ferry operators noted that they will continue monitoring fuel prices and may adjust the surcharge if energy costs stabilise in the coming months.
