Senate Moves to Limit Trump’s Military Action on Venezuela Crisis

Senate Moves to Limit Trump’s Military Action on Venezuela Crisis

Post by : Meena Ariff

The U.S. Senate voted 52-47 to advance a resolution that aims to restrict President Donald Trump from launching further military actions in Venezuela without explicit congressional approval. This rare bipartisan move saw several Republicans joining Democrats in pushing the war powers resolution forward, signaling growing congressional concern over unchecked executive military powers.

In an interview, Trump revealed that U.S. oversight of Venezuela could extend for years, emphasizing plans to manage the country’s vast oil resources profitably. He indicated that the U.S. could maintain control “much longer” than initially expected and expressed confidence in rebuilding Venezuela’s infrastructure. Trump also softened his stance on Colombia, inviting its leftist president, Gustavo Petro, for a future visit after previously criticising him harshly.

The Venezuelan government announced the release of numerous foreign and Venezuelan political prisoners, a gesture aimed at peace, though it was declared unilateral and not negotiated with opposition forces. Human rights groups estimate nearly 900 political prisoners remain in Venezuela, detained for political activism or protests following the disputed 2024 election.

Despite Trump’s firm stance, the Senate’s move reflects mounting pressure from lawmakers who want greater oversight on military operations abroad. For the resolution to become law, it must pass the House and overcome a potential presidential veto, requiring a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

Meanwhile, Trump is scheduled to meet with top U.S. oil company executives to discuss investing billions to revive Venezuela’s oil production, signaling Washington’s strategic interest in the country’s energy sector amid its ongoing humanitarian crisis and migration challenges.
