Qatar has issued a serious warning that the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz might ignite a significant global economic and security crisis.
In a recent briefing at the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative, stated that the ongoing disruption of this crucial maritime route since March has posed considerable economic hurdles for Gulf nations and the international community.
The briefing centered around a draft resolution for the UN Security Council concerning this strategic waterway. Officials from the United States and Gulf Cooperation Council nations—such as Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait—were also present during the media event.
According to Sheikha Alya, the closure has severely impacted nearly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, resulting in disrupted international supply chains and more than 20,000 seafarers stranded at sea.
Qatar emphasized that the crisis endangers global energy security, economic stability, and humanitarian conditions while escalating regional tensions. This situation poses a dire threat to international peace and security, the country warned.
Sheikha Alya urged that protecting freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is a collective international duty and a necessity under international maritime law and corresponding UN Security Council resolutions.
Qatar expressed hope that UN member states would back the proposed resolution aimed at safeguarding maritime routes and ensuring secure navigation through this vital waterway.
