Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has reached a significant milestone by successfully executing the UAE's inaugural cardiac neuroablation procedure. This innovative technique represents a breakthrough in cardiac treatment, tailored for individuals enduring repeated fainting spells related to irregular heart rhythms, offering an alternative to the traditional use of permanent pacemakers.
Currently, cardiac neuroablation is a rare procedure, available only at select elite cardiac facilities globally. It focuses on rectifying the underlying issues of heart rhythm anomalies associated with the autonomic nervous system rather than just alleviating symptoms.
This treatment specifically addresses abnormal nerve impulses stemming from the vagus nerve's overactivity, which can lead to rapid drops in heart rate and blood pressure, precipitating fainting. Doctors can stabilize heart rhythms through targeted therapy that minimizes invasiveness.
Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, emphasized that this achievement reinforces the institution's dedication to delivering exemplary cardiac care and enhances Abu Dhabi’s status as a hub for specialized healthcare services.
The pioneering procedure was performed on a 48-year-old woman who had been experiencing frequent fainting episodes that significantly impacted her daily life and personal safety. Instead of opting for the typical permanent pacemaker, physicians utilized cardiac neuroablation to directly address the source of her condition.
Dr. Fereidoon Shafiei, Cardiovascular Medicine Specialist at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, noted that introducing cardiac neuroablation is a crucial advancement in cardiac healthcare within the UAE. This procedure allows targeted correction of irregular heart rhythm pathways, often eliminating the need for permanent devices.
The technique is conducted using specialized catheters placed within blood vessels leading to the heart. Advanced mapping technology assists in pinpointing and adjusting the nerve pathways responsible for erratic heart rate control, all without the need for major surgery.
Dr. Khalid Bakr, Associate Staff Physician in Cardiovascular Medicine, remarked that this specialized catheter-based technique could dramatically enhance patients' quality of life by significantly reducing or completely halting recurrent fainting spells.
Post-procedure, the patient demonstrated significant improvements, maintaining a stable heart rhythm during subsequent follow-ups, enabling her to resume her regular activities without further fainting incidents, and reporting enhanced energy levels and quality of life.
This successful implementation of cardiac neuroablation underscores Abu Dhabi's expanding influence in integrating cutting-edge medical practices and signifies a broader shift toward precision, patient-centered healthcare initiatives.
