Indonesia is accelerating the construction of permanent homes for communities hit hard by floods and landslides in North Sumatra, while also expanding temporary shelters to support those still displaced. Priority areas include North Tapanuli and South Tapanuli districts, where damage has been severe.
In Dolok Nauli village, located in Adian Koting Sub-district of North Tapanuli, permanent housing foundations are underway in Simate Mate hamlet on land generously provided by the district government. A total of 103 permanent houses are being built over two hectares, with support from the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas. These Type-36 homes, featuring two bedrooms, are designed for residents whose houses were destroyed, heavily damaged, or located in high-risk flood and landslide zones.
Budiman Gultom, head of the North Tapanuli Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the housing project aims to be completed by April 21, 2026.
In South Tapanuli’s Sigala-gala village within the Batang Toru sub-district, 227 permanent homes are also under construction for families affected by major flooding in the Batang Toru river basin. Construction progress includes foundational work, bricklaying, and fitting door frames.
Alongside permanent housing, the government is preparing new land plots to help residents move out of temporary shelters and into safe, long-term homes.
Temporary housing efforts continue in remote areas like Sibalanga Village, where 40 temporary units are being developed by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency with local government support. The village’s remote location—an eight-hour journey from Medan—adds complexity to relief efforts.
In West Sumatra, temporary homes are also being built in Padang City’s Kapalo Koto Urban Village by the Police Mobile Brigade, with ongoing work on walls, floors, and structural frames.
This comprehensive, cross-agency effort showcases Indonesia’s strong commitment to sustainable disaster recovery, providing affected families with both immediate shelter and permanent housing solutions for a safer future.
