In a groundbreaking step towards tackling global water challenges, the UAE has revamped the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) as a pivotal evaluation criterion. This enhancement aims to promote the adoption of innovative technologies and inspire pioneering ideas to confront the urgent issue of water scarcity on a worldwide scale.
During a meeting chaired by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the head of the foundation overseeing the award, he emphasized the necessity of fostering creativity and innovation through the latest AI advancements. This alteration embodies the UAE's comprehensive vision to empower creative entrepreneurs and translate forward-thinking concepts into tangible projects that enhance access to clean and safe water on a global scale.
The award, which boasts a total prize pool of USD 1 million, is now geared towards prioritizing AI-infused solutions that enhance water management practices, boost efficiency, and lower expenses. Evaluators will rigorously assess the application of AI and machine learning in automating systems, forecasting demand, monitoring water quality proactively, and improving renewable energy storage related to water desalination and purification.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award is structured into four primary categories: Innovative Projects (both large and small), Innovative Research and Development (affiliated with national and international institutions), Innovative Individuals (notable researchers and youth), and Innovative Crisis Solutions. Each category comes equipped with distinct criteria, with creativity and innovation being heavily weighted, particularly with the new AI integration.
This emphasis on AI seeks to advance new methods and technologies in areas such as solar-based desalination, usage of wind and biomass energy, and sophisticated filtration systems. The objective is clear— to promote sustainable water solutions that can adapt to varying environments and effectively meet the escalating global demands.
By updating the award’s assessment criteria, the UAE sends a potent message regarding the future of water innovation. By encouraging AI-driven solutions, the initiative not only propels technological advancements but also paves the way for practical, scalable projects that can revolutionize communities and safeguard essential water resources for future generations.
