Brayden McNabb Sent Off for Major Interference in Playoff Clash

Brayden McNabb Sent Off for Major Interference in Playoff Clash

Post by : Shweta

During Game 5 of the NHL Western Conference second-round playoffs, Brayden McNabb of the Vegas Golden Knights faced ejection following a significant hit on Ryan Poehling of the Anaheim Ducks. The incident unfolded in the first period on Tuesday night in Las Vegas, quickly becoming a focal point of the match.

After officials reviewed the situation, McNabb was handed a five-minute major penalty for interference, accompanied by a game misconduct, leading to his early exit. Poehling, who was struck hard into the boards, required assistance to leave the ice. The Ducks later confirmed that he would not return due to an upper-body injury.

The collision took place near the Ducks’ blue line as Poehling was away from the puck. Following video assessments, referees deemed the contact as interference. The game's intensity escalated immediately, with players from both teams reacting avidly to the hit.

Despite losing McNabb, a key defenseman, the Golden Knights clinched a 3-2 overtime victory, thanks to a goal by Pavel Dorofeyev that allowed Vegas to take a 3-2 series lead.

McNabb is a vital component of the Golden Knights' defensive lineup, recognized for his aggressive play. At 35 years old, he’s been a cornerstone for the team this postseason, contributing to their Stanley Cup win in 2023. His ejection raised alarms for the squad, grappling with injuries during their playoff tenure.

The hit stirred debate among analysts and fans regarding the appropriateness of the ejection and if further disciplinary measures should follow. Some supported the officials' ruling due to Poehling's lack of puck possession, while others felt it reflected the intense milieu typical of playoff hockey. The NHL Department of Player Safety has yet to announce any potential suspension or additional consequences.

The series between Vegas and Anaheim has ramped up in physicality and emotion as both teams battle for a spot in the Western Conference Final. Game 6 is anticipated in Anaheim, where the Ducks aim to extend their season while the Golden Knights strive to secure their advancement.
