Authorities in Thailand have intensified flood prevention preparations in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province, ahead of the upcoming rainy season as concerns grow over possible river overflow and flash flooding in vulnerable residential areas.
On May 19, 2026, the 3rd Development Division joined forces with personnel from the volunteer engineering unit, troops from the Headquarters Company of the 37th Military District and soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment to carry out large-scale flood barrier construction work in cooperation with local government agencies.
The operation involved the mobilization of manpower, engineering equipment, heavy vehicles and emergency response materials to strengthen flood protection systems across several high-risk communities located near waterways and low-lying residential zones.
Military teams and local workers spent hours filling large industrial-sized Big Bags with sand before carefully positioning them to create temporary semi-permanent water barriers designed to block and redirect rising water flow during periods of heavy rainfall.
The flood prevention measures were concentrated in three key locations identified as highly vulnerable to seasonal flooding. These included the area near Ban Hua Fai, the front section of the government property building and the water barrier line surrounding the Mai Lung Khon community in Soi Ton Pho, Wiang Phang Subdistrict.
Officials said the project was launched as a proactive response to forecasts predicting increased rainfall activity during the monsoon season. Authorities fear that without early preparation, overflowing rivers and strong water currents could threaten homes, roads and public infrastructure in Mae Sai and nearby communities.
Residents in flood-prone areas have reportedly welcomed the operation, expressing hope that the strengthened barriers will reduce the risk of severe flooding that has affected parts of northern Thailand during previous rainy seasons.
Military officials stated that cooperation between security agencies, engineers, volunteers and local authorities is essential to improving disaster preparedness and protecting local communities from potential emergencies linked to extreme weather conditions.
Authorities also emphasized that the flood barriers are only part of broader disaster prevention measures currently being implemented in the region. Emergency monitoring systems, evacuation planning and river surveillance operations are also expected to continue throughout the rainy season.
The Thai military said its main objective is to minimize possible loss of life, reduce damage to homes and public property and ensure the safety and well-being of residents living near high-risk waterways until the monsoon season comes to an end.
Officials added that flood prevention teams will remain on standby in case water levels rise suddenly in the coming weeks, while additional support equipment and emergency response personnel may be deployed if weather conditions worsen.
