In a severe overnight offensive, Russia targeted Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, with missiles and drones, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals and injuring numerous others. This latest wave of aggression saw ballistic and cruise missiles as well as attack drones unleashing chaos in residential areas and civilian infrastructure, prompting thousands to seek safety as air raid sirens blared throughout the night.
The assault persisted for several hours, reverberating through the city. Ukrainian officials reported that emergency services were rapidly deployed across various districts, with rescue teams scouring wreckage for survivors and battling blazes ignited by the explosions.
Significant Damage to Residential Areas
Tymur Tkachenko, leading the Kyiv City Military Administration, noted that the missile strikes impacted 28 separate sites across the city, primarily targeting residential buildings and crucial infrastructures.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed injuries to at least 34 people, appealing to the community to take refuge in bomb shelters as emergency operations unfolded.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, five individuals were hurt, including a paramedic in critical condition. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine indicated notable damage to a hotel and two five-story apartment complexes during the bombardment.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts Throughout Kyiv
Emergency responders were dispatched to multiple regions where buildings had partially collapsed or ignited.
In the Desnianskyi district, rescuers attempted to free residents trapped in a damaged nine-story apartment building following significant structural failure.
A fire erupted atop a 16-story residential building in the Holosiivskyi district, fueled by the missile strike.
In the Sviatoshynskyi district, two private structures caught fire due to debris falling onto residential areas. Rescue teams responded after reports surfaced of people potentially trapped under debris.
In the Darnytskyi district, a direct strike led to the collapse of six floors in a nine-story apartment complex, and additional damage was recorded in nearby buildings and a 16-story complex.
Destruction was also reported in the Pecherskyi, Solomianskyi, Obolonskyi, and Podilskyi districts, where fires, damaged structures, and debris obstructed several roads.
Intensified Russian Attacks on Kyiv
This recent offensive marks an escalation in Russia's missile and drone campaigns against Kyiv over the past weeks. Ukrainian authorities assert that these renewed strikes aim to exert pressure on Ukraine by targeting civilian facilities and urban populations.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues its offensive drone operations against Russian military installations and logistics centers, disrupting supply lines and inducing fuel shortages across various Russian locales, further intensifying cross-border confrontations.
Damage Assessment by Emergency Services
Authorities indicated that rescue and recovery operations persisted throughout Thursday, with firefighters tackling multiple fires and structural engineers evaluating damage to residential properties.
Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional Administration, confirmed that damage from falling missile debris was noted in five districts surrounding the capital, though no immediate fatalities were reported from these areas.
Officials warned that casualty numbers could escalate as emergency teams continue searching through rubble for survivors.
This attack underscores the escalating intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides intensifying long-range assaults despite ongoing international efforts to facilitate diplomatic discussions. Ukrainian officials have reiterated the importance of adhering to air raid warnings and remaining in shelters during missile threats, as additional attacks remain a significant concern.
