Peru’s Congress has elected José María Balcázar as the country’s new president, making him the eighth leader in just ten years. He replaces interim president José Jerí, who was removed from office over corruption allegations after serving only four months.
Balcázar, an 83-year-old former judge and member of the left-leaning Perú Libre party, won the vote with a majority in the 130-member Congress of Peru. He was sworn in shortly after the vote and will serve as a caretaker president for the next five months.
Peru’s frequent changes in leadership highlight a deep political crisis, where lawmakers have repeatedly removed presidents using constitutional provisions related to “moral incapacity.” The current Congress has now impeached three heads of state since 2021, reflecting long-standing instability in the country’s governance.
Balcázar has promised to ensure free and transparent elections scheduled for April 12, when Peruvians will vote for a new president and legislature. He also said macroeconomic and monetary policies would remain stable to maintain confidence among investors and businesses.
The incoming elected government will face major challenges, including rising crime, extortion, and public distrust in political institutions. Various political groups are calling for strong guarantees to ensure the upcoming elections are fair and credible, as the country looks for stability after years of turmoil.
