Jess Naz's Season Cut Short After ACL Injury

Jess Naz's Season Cut Short After ACL Injury

Post by : Maya Rahman

Jess Naz, the talented forward for England and Tottenham Hotspur, has unfortunately been sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a significant ACL injury. The incident occurred during Tottenham's narrow victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, necessitating surgery on her right knee for recovery.

This marks Naz's second ACL injury in her career; she previously spent the entire 2019-20 Women's Super League season recovering from a similar injury in her other knee. Her absence is a considerable setback for Tottenham, where she had been a consistent presence in every WSL match this season. With six England caps, she was also part of the squad during recent encounters against Brazil and Australia.

Sadly, Naz is not alone in facing such injuries; fellow England players Michelle Agyemang and Katie Reid have also suffered similar fate this season. Many in the football community, including young talents like Keira Walsh of England and Chelsea, have expressed concerns about the demanding match schedules. Walsh highlighted the necessity for football authorities to “listen to the players” and reconsider fixture congestion, which she contends is a factor in the surge of knee injuries.

The 2023 WSL season has seen a troubling rise in ACL injuries among players, including Agyemang, Maite Oroz, Marie Höbinger, Manu Zinsberger, Sophie Roman Haug, Jill Baijings, Reid, and now Naz. This growing list underscores the urgent need for enhanced player welfare, the adoption of safer schedules, and effective injury prevention strategies in women’s football. Fans and teammates await updates as Naz embarks on her recovery, hoping for a robust comeback both for her club and the England team.
