In a major setback for the highly awaited Vijay starrer Jana Nayagan, the Madras High Court on Tuesday overturned the single judge’s order directing the Censor Board to issue the censor certificate for the film. This ruling has further delayed the movie’s theatrical release.
The court pointed out that the single judge should have allowed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) enough time to respond before granting the certificate. Therefore, Jana Nayagan cannot be shown in theaters until it receives official clearance from the CBFC.
A fresh hearing regarding the censor certificate is scheduled soon at the Madras High Court. Earlier, on January 20, the court had reserved its verdict and planned to announce the decision on January 27 (today).
Jana Nayagan, promoted as Vijay’s last film before he enters politics full-time, was initially scheduled for a worldwide release on January 9, ahead of the Pongal festival. However, days before the release, the Censor Board referred the film to the revising committee after a complaint.
The producers, KVN Productions, approached the Madras High Court, which initially ordered the Censor Board to grant a UA certificate after modifications. However, the board challenged this ruling, prompting a two-judge bench of the Madras High Court to stay the earlier decision and postpone the case until January 21, after Pongal holidays.
Following this, KVN Productions sought urgent relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court heard the matter on January 15 but dismissed the plea, sending it back to the Madras High Court for further hearing.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay along with Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.
Fans await the film’s release eagerly, but the final clearance from the Censor Board is still pending, delaying the much-anticipated movie’s launch.
