Srinagar, Nov 15, 2025: Authorities confirmed that a powerful blast at Nowgam police station, located near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the death of nine individuals on Friday. The explosion occurred while forensic teams were analyzing materials from a significant cache of explosives found earlier in Faridabad, Haryana, during a targeted operation against a terror group.
Among those who lost their lives were members of the Special Investigation Team (SIA), personnel from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), crime scene investigators, and even a local tailor who assisted the team. J&K Police Chief Nalin Prabhat stated that while the incident was accidental, it was tied to the explosives seized in Haryana.
The explosives, part of a 2,900 kg load retrieved from the residences of suspected individuals in Faridabad, were uncovered as part of a larger investigation concerning an inter-state Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror module. This particular network was believed to be behind several recent threats and attacks, including the deadly Red Fort explosion in Delhi earlier this month, which resulted in ten fatalities.
Investigative reports have indicated that the Faridabad explosives are connected to urban terror networks operating in Jammu and Kashmir. Key findings included 2,563 kg of explosive materials seized from the residence of Hafeez Mohammad Ishtiaq, a local imam, along with an additional 358 kg of explosives, detonators, and timers discovered at surrounding sites.
Authorities have apprehended several individuals associated with the terror module, spanning various professions including clerics and medical practitioners in areas such as Nowgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama, and Kulgam. During subsequent operations, JeM-related materials were also identified. Investigators found links to past plots associated with the Red Fort incident, notably Dr. Umar un Nabi, who allegedly detonated a similar blast in Delhi.
The tragedy at Nowgam police station highlights the dangers faced by security and forensic teams when managing substantial amounts of confiscated explosives. Residents in Srinagar expressed their grief over the incident, prompting police to initiate a thorough inquiry to verify compliance with safety protocols.
Officials reiterated that this incident forms part of ongoing nationwide operations targeting terror networks associated with JeM and other extremist factions. The discovery and confiscation of explosives in Faridabad represented a significant achievement but the recent explosion underscores the persistent threats from terrorist arsenals.
As investigations proceed, authorities are calling for heightened awareness in the handling of explosive materials and have reassured citizens that dismantling terror networks remains a critical focus.
