The death toll from a school building collapse in Indonesia has risen to 63, officials confirmed on Monday, as rescue teams continue to recover bodies from the rubble. The incident occurred last week when part of a multi-storey Islamic boarding school on Java island gave way while more than 150 students were gathered for afternoon prayers. Around six students remain missing.
National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) operations director Yudhi Bramantyo said in a press conference, “We hope we can conclude the recovery today, and we will return the bodies to the families.”

Budi Irawan, deputy head of Indonesia’s national disaster agency (BNPB), described the collapse as the deadliest disaster in the country so far this year. Investigators are examining the cause, with early reports suggesting that substandard construction may have contributed to the tragedy.
Families of the missing had agreed to allow heavy equipment to be used in the search last Thursday, after the 72-hour “golden period” for survival had ended.
Concerns over lax construction standards are widespread in Indonesia, where similar incidents have occurred in recent months. In September, a building hosting a prayer recital in West Java collapsed, killing three people and injuring dozens more.
The tragic collapse has once again raised urgent questions about building safety and regulatory enforcement in the country, as authorities work to ensure all remaining victims are accounted for.
