Indonesia has signaled that it may withdraw from a United States-led international peace initiative if it fails to benefit the Palestinian people. President Prabowo Subianto reassured Islamic leaders that the country would not remain part of the platform if it conflicted with Indonesia’s long-standing support for Palestine.
The statement came amid domestic criticism over Indonesia’s participation in a proposed peace framework reportedly backed by Donald Trump. The initiative, sometimes referred to as the “Board of Peace,” aims to bring together several countries to discuss regional stability and potential post-conflict arrangements in Gaza. Indonesia’s involvement has drawn attention because the country is the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation and has historically been a strong supporter of Palestinian statehood.
According to Indonesian officials, President Prabowo held a meeting with leaders of several Islamic organizations in Jakarta to address concerns about the initiative. During the meeting, he reportedly stressed that Indonesia’s participation would depend on whether it produces tangible benefits for the Palestinian people and aligns with the country’s national interests.
Some Indonesian religious groups have urged the government to leave the platform entirely. The Indonesian Ulema Council, one of the country’s most influential clerical bodies, previously called on the government to reconsider its involvement due to the role of the United States in ongoing Middle East tensions. Meanwhile, the major Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama suggested Indonesia could instead use the platform to encourage dialogue and reduce regional conflict.
Indonesia has also faced scrutiny for discussing the possibility of contributing personnel to a potential stabilization force in Gaza if an international peace arrangement emerges. However, Indonesian authorities say no final decisions have been made and that any involvement would depend on international consensus and clear benefits for Palestinian civilians.
Officials have noted that discussions within the peace initiative have slowed significantly due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono previously indicated that meetings connected to the initiative had been paused as tensions in the region continue.
