Indonesia has suspended its plan to deploy peacekeeping troops to Gaza amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The announcement was made by Prasetyo Hadi following a high-level coordination meeting at the Ministry of Defense in Jakarta.
The country had earlier committed to sending up to 8,000 personnel as part of an international stabilization mission. However, the worsening security situation in the region has forced authorities to put the deployment on hold indefinitely. Officials stated that the safety of troops and clarity in geopolitical conditions remain key concerns before any further action.
Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin had previously indicated that Indonesia’s contribution would be among the largest in the mission. The deployment plan was scaled down from an initial proposal of 20,000 troops to 8,000, still exceeding contributions expected from several other nations.
Despite the suspension, the Indonesian National Armed Forces remains on high alert, with troops continuing training and preparedness drills. Authorities confirmed that deployment will only proceed after approval from the relevant peacekeeping bodies and once regional stability improves.
Indonesia has consistently supported Palestinian independence and humanitarian efforts in Gaza. However, officials have made it clear that any military deployment will depend on reduced hostilities and an official international mandate. No timeline has been provided for when the mission could resume.
