Early Thursday, extensive gunfire and explosions were reported near Diori Hamani International Airport in Niger’s capital, Niamey, as per local residents and AFP. The terrifying sounds sent ripples of panic throughout surrounding areas, where residents witnessed flames shooting into the sky.
Footage circulating online depicted bright lights, loud blasts, burning vehicles, and thick smoke blanketing the airport vicinity. Reports indicate that the shooting began just after midnight and persisted for approximately two hours prior to the return of calm.
Located about 10 kilometers from the presidential palace, Diori Hamani International Airport also accommodates an air force base, making it a vital security installation that serves as the headquarters for a joint military force dedicated to combating militant groups in cooperation with Burkina Faso and Mali.
Thus far, no official reports of casualties have emerged, and the reason behind the incident remains uncertain. Witnesses noted seeing and hearing fire trucks and emergency sirens responding to the scene.
Since the coup in 2023 which ousted the elected civilian government, Niger has been under the rule of military leader Abdourahamane Tiani. The airport has also drawn attention due to a large uranium shipment that has been delayed for several weeks.
Official authorities have yet to comment on the incident.
