FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has announced that a coalition of Formula 1 stakeholders has reached a consensus on substantial regulatory changes for the upcoming 2026 season.
This resolution emerged from a virtual assembly involving the FIA, team leaders, CEOs of power unit manufacturers, and Formula One Management (FOM). Discussions revolved around reinforcing safety, achieving performance parity, and elevating the quality of racing.
Approved modifications encompass enhancements to energy management in qualifying, race safety protocols, power control regulations, and upgraded strategies for racing in wet conditions. These revisions are designed to boost both safety and competitiveness.
A notable adjustment is the increase in events eligible for lower energy limits, which will now extend from 8 to 12 races, allowing for better adaptability to varying circuit conditions.
Furthermore, the FIA has introduced initiatives to minimize significant speed disparities between vehicles while facilitating overtaking and ensuring that performance standards are upheld.
For enhanced visibility during adverse weather, the design of rear light systems has been streamlined. This improvement aims to enable quicker reactions from drivers, thereby increasing safety during rain-affected races.
Race start mechanisms will undergo further trials during the Miami Grand Prix weekend ahead of their final endorsement.
The conclusive set of recommendations is slated for an electronic vote by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. If endorsed, the majority of alterations will be adopted before the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem commended all parties involved—including FIA staff, teams, drivers, and manufacturers—for their collaboration and swift decision-making.
He emphasized that safety and equitable competition continue to remain the FIA’s foremost concerns, with these adjustments being informed by data compiled from the early-season races.
The FIA Region I Spring Meeting, held in Budva, Montenegro, where these dialogues took place, also wrapped up with broader discussions on safe and sustainable mobility across 102 FIA member clubs.
