A 35-year-old woman teacher in Singapore has been sentenced to nine years jail after pleading guilty to multiple sexual offences involving a student who was 15 years old at the time of the incidents. The case was heard at the State Courts of Singapore on Monday, Oct 5, with the court hearing that the teacher had committed several sexual acts with the student at different locations, including a school toilet, a karaoke room and the upper deck of a double-decker bus. The teacher had pleaded guilty to one charge involving sexual penetration of a minor and two charges relating to the sexual exploitation of a young person below the age of 16. A further five charges of sexually exploiting a young person, one charge of sexual grooming and another charge involving sexual communication with a minor were taken into consideration when the court determined the sentence.
The court heard that the woman was the victim's mathematics teacher. The student was in Secondary 3 when the incidents occurred. According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Yeo Kee Hwan, the student had been dealing with significant family difficulties and had previously received intervention from Child Protection Services because of concerns over harsh physical punishment at home. The student was also dealing with mental health difficulties, including adjustment disorder. Teachers who were aware of her circumstances included the accused teacher.
The first sexual encounter took place in a karaoke room on Oct 13, 2023. The court heard that the teacher and student discussed what had happened over the following two days. They agreed that they would stop engaging in further sexual acts.

On Oct 16, after the student had completed an examination, the teacher took her to a female staff toilet at the school. Another sexual act took place there. The incidents subsequently continued at other locations. Among the locations mentioned in court were the upper deck of a double-decker bus and a room rented for watching movies. The repeated incidents eventually became part of a police investigation after the student disclosed what had happened.
The relationship between the teacher and student later broke down. On Jan 16, 2024, the student told a safety adult appointed by Child Protection Services that she had been sexually assaulted on three occasions. The information was then referred to the school's vice principal. The following day, the vice principal accompanied the student to make a police report. The disclosure eventually led to the investigation into the teacher and the subsequent criminal proceedings.
The court heard that the impact on the student continued after the incidents. Being at school became difficult for her because the environment reminded her of what had happened. She would break down at school and struggled to cope with reminders of the incidents. The student was diagnosed with adjustment disorder. She also experienced insomnia, nightmares, flashbacks and recurring thoughts about the offences. The court heard that she had also experienced suicidal thoughts. Her mathematics lessons were particularly difficult because they reminded her of the accused teacher and the events that had taken place. As a result, the student struggled to concentrate on her studies and her academic performance deteriorated.
During sentencing submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutors Selene Yap and Yeo Kee Hwan argued for a substantial prison sentence. The prosecution described the relationship and the sexual acts as exploitative, particularly considering the student's age, vulnerability and the professional position held by the teacher. The prosecution sought an overall sentence of eight years and 14 to 16 months' imprisonment. The case raised concerns about the professional boundaries that teachers are expected to maintain with students, particularly when a student is experiencing personal and family difficulties.
The teacher was represented by lawyer Kalaithasan Karuppaya of Regent Law LLC. During mitigation, the defence argued that the teacher was remorseful and pointed to her cooperation with investigators and her decision to plead guilty. Her lawyer described the conduct as a lapse in judgment and asked the court to impose a sentence of eight years and six months. The defence also told the court that the woman had sought professional assistance from a psychiatrist. Her husband submitted a testimonial describing her as a wife and mother to a four-year-old child. He told the court that he believed she was capable of genuine rehabilitation.
District Judge Paul Chan said the teacher had made serious errors of judgment. The judge said her actions crossed the professional boundaries expected between a teacher and a student. At the same time, Judge Chan made clear that the sentencing assessment was focused on the offences and the circumstances surrounding them, rather than judging the woman in her role as a mother or wife. The judge also acknowledged the harm suffered by the student. He expressed hope that the teacher would use the opportunity after her release to change her life. Judge Chan referred to the testimonials presented to the court and said they indicated that the woman had qualities that could be used positively in the future. After the sentence was announced, the teacher began to cry in court.
The court was told that the offence involving sexual penetration of a minor carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine. The punishment can also include caning in circumstances where the law permits it. However, women cannot be caned under Singapore law. For the separate offence of sexually exploiting a minor, the teacher could face a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both. The court ultimately imposed a total sentence of nine years' imprisonment after considering the charges to which she pleaded guilty, the additional charges taken into consideration, the circumstances of the student and the overall impact of the offences.
The case has highlighted the importance of professional boundaries between educators and students, particularly where a young person is already facing difficulties at home. The court heard that the student had initially approached the teacher for support and advice regarding family problems. The relationship subsequently developed into sexual encounters, despite the significant age difference and the teacher's position of responsibility. The student's later disclosure to a Child Protection Services-appointed safety adult eventually brought the matter to the attention of school authorities and police. The case also demonstrates the longer-term consequences that sexual offences involving minors can have on victims. The student experienced nightmares, flashbacks, insomnia, panic attacks and difficulty concentrating, while also struggling to trust adults. Her difficulties affected her education and daily life, with the school environment itself becoming a source of distress.
