The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has officially approved SpaceX's request to deploy an additional 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites, significantly expanding its satellite internet constellation. This approval doubles the total number of Gen2 Starlink satellites authorized for operation, raising the fleet size to 15,000 satellites orbiting the Earth.
In addition to approving the satellite increase, the FCC has granted SpaceX permission to enhance the functionality of these satellites. SpaceX can now operate the satellites across five different frequency bands, allowing for more efficient use of the spectrum. This improvement is expected to increase the network’s capacity and provide better coverage.
Moreover, the FCC has waived previous regulatory conditions that restricted overlapping satellite coverage. Removing these restrictions enables SpaceX to provide more flexible, overlapping satellite signals, which will boost internet performance and reliability, especially in areas where connectivity has traditionally been limited or unreliable.
These developments are part of SpaceX’s ongoing efforts to improve global internet access by delivering faster, more reliable broadband services through its Starlink satellite network. The expanded constellation and enhanced operational capabilities are expected to improve the quality and reach of internet service worldwide, including remote and underserved regions.
