Abu Dhabi Enhances SEHHI Initiative for Healthier Workplaces

Abu Dhabi Enhances SEHHI Initiative for Healthier Workplaces

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre has rolled out an expansion of the SEHHI initiative, aimed at improving the accessibility of nutritious food choices in workplaces throughout the emirate. This update introduces fresh technical guidelines to foster better dietary habits among employees.

The focus of this enhancement lies in embedding preventive health practices into the everyday environment, particularly in places where individuals spend a significant amount of their time. The ultimate aim is to facilitate healthier choices without imposing additional efforts on them.

These newly established guidelines provide a straightforward and effective framework for organizations in both the public and private sectors. This initiative aids employers in translating their health-focused promises into tangible actions by designing environments conducive to healthy behaviors and food selections.

A major requirement is the inclusion of calorie information displayed at food service locations. Furthermore, a minimum of 30% of items on menus must conform to SEHHI nutritional criteria. The guidelines also address the organization of meals, snacks, beverages, and vending machine offerings, ensuring that healthier choices are more prominent and accessible.

The framework lays out clear roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders, including employers and food vendors. It outlines essential steps such as registration, assigning responsible personnel, vetting food options, training staff, conducting awareness campaigns, and regularly assessing progress and outcomes.

Dr. Rashed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, emphasized the significance of this initiative. He remarked that workplaces significantly influence daily habits, and this program aims to seamlessly incorporate healthy choices into the routine of everyday life.

The guidelines are applicable to all work environments in Abu Dhabi providing food and beverages, which encompasses cafeterias, catering services, vending machines, kiosks, and coffee stations. Employers are encouraged to register and begin the implementation process through official SEHHI channels.
