Donovan Doubts Australia's Chances in World Cup After Coach's Remarks

Donovan Doubts Australia's Chances in World Cup After Coach's Remarks

Post by : Maya Rahman

Landon Donovan, the former U.S. captain, has expressed skepticism regarding Australia coach Tony Popovic’s upbeat remarks about the 2026 World Cup draw. He predicts the Socceroos may face an early exit from the tournament. The U.S., hosting the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, is positioned in Group D with Paraguay and Australia, as well as a playoff winner. Donovan argues that the U.S. holds a competitive advantage, pointing to recent victories against both Paraguay and Australia, making them favorites to advance.

Popovic conveyed optimism about his squad's prospects following the draw, stating that the players are eager and prepared for this significant event. However, Donovan, during a FOX Soccer podcast featuring fellow former U.S. stars Cobi Jones and Brad Guzan, voiced disagreement with Popovic's seemingly overly confident stance. He noted that while coaches typically exercise caution in such comments, Popovic's satisfaction was striking.

Donovan acknowledged Australia’s competitive nature but remained firm in his belief that the U.S. should emerge victorious. On the podcast, he, Jones, and Guzan confidently predicted the U.S. would move forward to the knockout stages as group leaders. Donovan humorously advised Popovic to “get back on the Qantas airplane” after the tournament, reinforcing his conviction that the U.S. will outperform Australia.

In their group analysis, the commentary team predicted the playoff winner would secure second place, Paraguay third, with Australia potentially struggling, which aligns with Donovan’s critique of Popovic’s confidence. These observations reflect Donovan’s competitive spirit and belief in the U.S. team’s prospects as hosts in the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup.
