The Walt Disney Company is set to reduce its workforce by approximately 1,000 positions in the near future, particularly targeting its marketing department, as reported by The Wall Street Journal based on insiders' information.
This reduction represents less than 1% of Disney's overall global workforce, which counted around 231,000 employees at the end of the fiscal year 2025.
Sources indicate that planning for these layoffs commenced before Josh D'Amaro took the helm as CEO in March, suggesting that the blueprint for this shift has been in the pipeline for a while.
Simultaneously, Asad Ayaz, Disney's new Chief Marketing Officer, is spearheading efforts to integrate the marketing operations into a cohesive framework. This initiative, dubbed “Project Imagine,” aspires to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs.
Since January, Ayaz has been managing a newly formed company-wide marketing division, marking a significant transition towards a more consolidated marketing strategy.
While Reuters has stated it cannot confirm the report independently, Disney has yet to respond to inquiries outside of regular business hours.
This adjustment signifies a larger trend of cost-control measures within the media and entertainment sectors, as firms navigate the shifting landscape of consumer demands and market conditions.
