The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has marked a significant milestone in Dubai’s clean energy initiatives by adding 1,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy production capacity as of 2025. This achievement is part of the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is planned to reach a total capacity of 1,800MW, underscoring Dubai’s commitment to advancing renewable energy in alignment with global standards.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, highlighted that this accomplishment aligns with the vision set forth by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. He emphasized the intent to accelerate the shift to renewable energy to reinforce Dubai’s status as a leader in sustainability and innovation in energy.
Al Tayer elaborated that the initiative follows a strategic long-term framework focused on phased implementation. This methodology bolsters the reliability of Dubai’s energy infrastructure while catering to the increasing demands from economic expansion, urban growth, and a rising population. Additionally, this milestone significantly contributes to the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which sets a goal for 100% of Dubai’s energy production to come from clean sources by mid-century.
DEWA noted that this advancement fortifies Dubai's position as a prominent global model in the transition towards a green economy, one built on sustainability, technology, and innovation. It demonstrates the rapid pace at which DEWA is enhancing its renewable energy projects, amplifying the share of clean energy within the overall energy framework, and constructing a future-ready, efficient, and sustainable power generation ecosystem.
Initiated in 2012 by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a cornerstone project in supporting the UAE’s broader clean energy ambitions. With this latest addition, the solar park now boasts a total production capacity of 3,860MW.
By 2030, the overall capacity of the solar park is projected to surpass 8,000MW, exceeding earlier targets of 5,000MW. This rapid increase illustrates Dubai’s accelerated transition to clean energy. Once the project is fully operational, it is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 8.5 million tonnes annually, further enhancing Dubai’s global position as a knowledge and innovation-driven green economy hub.
DEWA's efforts to expand clean energy will persist, with plans to solicit bids for the seventh phase of the solar park in 2025, indicating additional capacity developments are on the horizon. Concurrently, the remaining 800MW from the sixth phase is slated for completion and grid connection by the final quarter of 2026.
With consistent advancements and significant investments in renewable energy, Dubai is advancing rapidly toward its long-term objective of becoming one of the world’s foremost cities in producing clean, sustainable, and future-oriented energy.
