Britain’s top film body, BAFTA, has revealed the full list of five actors shortlisted for its only award decided entirely by public vote, marking a major moment for emerging talent in the film industry. The announcement, made on Wednesday, completes the shortlist for the highly watched Rising Star Award, one of the most anticipated categories at the BAFTA Film Awards.
The five contenders come from different backgrounds and countries, but all have delivered performances that caught the attention of critics, audiences, and industry insiders over the past year. British actors Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling complete the shortlist, joining American actor Infiniti, US actor and musician Caton, and British actor Aramayo.
The Rising Star Award is unique among BAFTA honours because it is the only prize decided by the public rather than industry professionals. Fans are invited to vote for the actor they believe has shown exceptional promise and impact on screen. Over the years, the award has helped launch the careers of stars who later became global names.
American actor Infiniti earned her nomination for her powerful role in the critically praised film One Battle After Another. In the movie, she plays Willa, the kidnapped daughter of a character portrayed by Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Despite sharing the screen with an established Hollywood star, Infiniti’s emotional performance stood out and won widespread praise. Critics highlighted her ability to convey fear, resilience, and strength, making her one of the most talked-about newcomers of the year.
Another American nominee, Caton, received recognition for his role in Sinners, which also marked his acting debut. Known previously for his work as a musician, Caton surprised audiences by delivering a strong and convincing performance as Sammie, a gifted blues musician navigating personal struggles. His transition from music to acting has been described as impressive, with many reviewers noting his natural screen presence and emotional depth.
British actor Aramayo was shortlisted for his role in I Swear, a film based on real-life activism. He portrays John Davidson, a Scottish campaigner who has spent years raising awareness about Tourette syndrome. Aramayo’s performance was praised for its sensitivity and honesty, shedding light on a condition that is often misunderstood. The film has been widely appreciated for its social message, and Aramayo’s portrayal played a key role in bringing the story to life.
Archie Madekwe earned his nomination for his role in the thriller Lurker, where he plays Oliver, a rising pop star caught in a tense and dangerous situation. Madekwe’s performance captured both the glamour and pressure of fame, as well as the darker side of the music industry. His ability to balance charm with vulnerability impressed critics and helped make the film a standout in its genre.
Completing the list is Posy Sterling, nominated for her role in the drama Lollipop. Sterling plays Molly, a young mother recently released from prison who struggles to rebuild her life while caring for her child. Her performance was praised for its realism and emotional impact, with many reviewers calling it raw and deeply moving. Sterling’s portrayal brought attention to the challenges faced by women trying to reintegrate into society after incarceration.
The winner of the Rising Star Award will be announced at the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on February 22. The recipient will join an impressive list of past winners, including Spider-Man star Tom Holland and Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya, both of whom went on to achieve major international success after receiving the honour.
BAFTA also confirmed that the full list of nominees for the 2026 Film Awards will be announced on January 27. As excitement builds ahead of the ceremony, the Rising Star Award once again highlights the next generation of actors shaping the future of cinema.
