WASHINGTON, DC — The United States has confirmed that more than 17,500 American citizens have safely returned from the Middle East since February 28, as regional tensions intensified following military strikes on Iran.
According to the U.S. Department of State, over 8,500 Americans returned in a single day, marking one of the largest evacuation movements in recent weeks. Many others have departed the region for Europe and Asia and remain in transit back to the United States.
Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson said the department’s 24/7 task force has assisted nearly 6,500 Americans abroad by providing security guidance, travel coordination, and consular support. The department stated it will continue helping any American citizen wishing to leave the Middle East.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio advised Americans in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Israel to seek departure assistance if needed.
The evacuations follow escalating conflict after US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting US and Israeli assets in the region.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command confirmed continued high-volume air operations. The State Department reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of American citizens overseas amid ongoing instability.
