European Aerospace Giants Join Forces to Challenge Starlink

European Aerospace Giants Join Forces to Challenge Starlink

Post by : Badri Ariffin

European Aerospace Leaders Unite to Revamp Satellite Industry

In a bold move to counter the skyrocketing growth of Elon Musk’s Starlink, European aerospace giants Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo announced plans to merge their struggling satellite manufacturing divisions. The preliminary agreement, revealed on Thursday, marks a significant step in consolidating Europe’s position in the competitive space sector.

The new venture, set to launch in 2027 pending regulatory approvals, aims to create a powerhouse employing around 25,000 professionals across Europe. Based on 2024 financials, the combined entity is expected to generate an annual turnover of approximately €6.5 billion ($7.58 billion). Airbus will hold a 35% stake, while Thales and Leonardo will each control 32.5%, sharing governance equally.

This strategic consolidation comes after months of intensive discussions, as European manufacturers grapple with increasing pressure from private space enterprises. Starlink’s aggressive expansion and technological edge have highlighted the need for European players to collaborate, streamline operations, and enhance competitiveness.

By pooling resources, expertise, and technologies, the alliance aims to accelerate satellite production, reduce costs, and strengthen Europe’s foothold in global satellite services. Analysts see this as a timely response to the disruptive influence of commercial satellite operators and a potential blueprint for future European space collaborations.

The move also signals a shift in Europe’s space strategy, balancing innovation with industrial resilience, ensuring that the continent remains a key player in the rapidly evolving satellite market.
