Zohran Mamdani will make history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor when he takes office on January 1, 2026. At 34, he will also be the youngest individual to hold the post in more than a century, a development seen as emblematic of the city’s changing demographics and leadership style.
Mamdani’s campaign drew attention for its progressive agenda and energetic outreach, while his spouse, Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji, has largely avoided the spotlight.
Their relationship began in 2021 after meeting on the dating app Hinge. The couple became engaged in October 2024 and held a nikah ceremony in December 2024 in Dubai, where Duwaji spent much of her childhood and where her family continues to live.
The Dubai event took place on the rooftop of Vida Creek Harbour, with views of the Burj Khalifa. Organizers transformed the space into a white floral setting with ivory roses, lisianthus and abundant greenery. For the nikah, Duwaji chose a silver-toned white gown, while Mamdani wore a navy blue kurta, blending contemporary elegance with cultural tradition.
After the Dubai ceremony, the couple completed a modest courthouse wedding in February 2025 at the Lower Manhattan city clerk’s office. In July 2025 they held a private three-day celebration at Mamdani’s family estate in Uganda for close relatives and friends.
Mamdani comes from a prominent, internationally connected family. He is the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan academic of Indian heritage. His upbringing across cultures has informed his political outlook and public service approach.
Observers have hailed his election as a milestone in New York politics: beyond the first-Muslim designation, it signals younger leaders taking on major roles and a broader representation of the city’s communities.
The couple’s multi-location celebrations—from Dubai to Manhattan to Uganda—reflect their global ties and a modern mix of tradition and cosmopolitan lifestyle.
With the inauguration scheduled for January 1, Mamdani enters office poised to bring youthful energy, cultural diversity and a forward-looking agenda to New York City governance.
