Liverpool's captain, Virgil van Dijk, asserted that Mohamed Salah must continually prove his worth after being sidelined during two recent Premier League matches. Salah, who is 33, missed Liverpool's 2-0 victory over West Ham United and only appeared as a substitute in the drawn game against Sunderland.
Having signed a two-year contract extension in April, Salah has netted five goals in 19 appearances this season but has found it challenging to replicate the form that helped the club secure last season's league title. Van Dijk emphasized that no one is guaranteed a spot, and every player must show their capabilities to remain in the starting XI.
“Mo has performed well, but the manager made choices for the last couple of matches. Our goal is the success of the club,” Van Dijk said. He reaffirmed Salah’s importance and expected that he would play a crucial role in Liverpool's ongoing campaign.
Liverpool currently holds ninth place in the Premier League, accumulating 22 points from 14 matches and trailing Arsenal by 11 points. Van Dijk reiterated that Salah is an outstanding player, and the team requires him to regain his best form to enhance their results this season.
