Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams will be on the entry list for the Auckland Classic in January at 45, having been handed a wild card for the warm-up event running January 5–11.
Williams made a comeback to the tour at the US Open in August after a 16-month break. Tournament director Nicolas Lamperin lauded her physical condition and on-court displays, saying, “She remains one of the most accomplished players of the modern era, and her results speak loudly. Off court, she’s made a substantial impact on the sport and supported the progress of female athletes worldwide.”
Lamperin also noted Williams’ role in shaping women’s tennis, adding that her passion and persistence have motivated younger players across the globe.
The American, who beat Caroline Wozniacki to lift the Auckland title in 2015, owns five Wimbledon singles crowns, two US Open titles and an Olympic gold medal from Sydney 2000.
Describing her return as a “privilege,” Lamperin urged local fans to come see a living legend in action during the tournament.
Japan’s Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has likewise confirmed her appearance at the event.
With the Australian Open scheduled to begin in Melbourne on January 18, the Auckland Classic is expected to serve as a crucial tune-up for contenders.
