At least 14 people lost their lives after a gold mine collapsed in the El Callao municipality in southern Venezuela due to heavy rains, emergency officials confirmed on Monday.
Teams from the National Risk System are currently working on recovery operations. The victims were found in three separate mining shafts, authorities said.
Emergency officials explained that the initial stage of the rescue involves pumping water out of all the shafts in the area to lower water levels, after which further recovery and rescue operations will be carried out.
The incident highlights the risks faced by miners in Venezuela, particularly during the rainy season when heavy rains can lead to sudden mine collapses.
