In a recent update, Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been assessed as medically stable and subsequently returned to Adiala Jail, according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar's statement on Friday.
The 73-year-old Khan was moved from prison for a hospital evaluation after a Supreme Court ruling mandated his transfer to medical care earlier this week.
This marks the first instance since February that Khan has been permitted to leave prison for such an assessment.
Following a thorough evaluation at a governmental hospital, a team of medical professionals reported that Khan met the required health standards.
The team, which comprised an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a physician, conducted the examination with the presence of Khan's sister, Uzma Khan.
Interestingly, Khan was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences instead of Shifa International Hospital, as initially directed by the Supreme Court, due to security apprehensions regarding his transport and the expected gathering of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters.
Post-evaluation, Khan was returned to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi around 5 a.m. local time.
The Supreme Court had previously instructed officials to ensure Khan's transfer to Shifa International Hospital within a 48-hour window, along with access to a medical panel that includes his personal doctor.
His political party interpreted the ruling as an indication that Khan would be hospitalized for a more extended timeframe.
Supporters of PTI gathered in the capital overnight as Khan was being transported for his medical check-up. Many were seen lining the streets and showering petals towards a vehicle believed to be transporting him.
Initially, PTI claimed Khan had been admitted to Shifa International Hospital, but they have not immediately commented on subsequent official statements regarding his examination at a government facility.
Khan has been detained since August 2023, and his legal representatives have consistently voiced concerns over his health condition, claiming it has worsened while incarcerated.
Moreover, his legal team has reported a significant decline in vision in his right eye.
The government has disputed claims of an urgent medical need, pointing out that past medical examinations failed to indicate any conditions requiring immediate attention.
Khan argues that the cases against him stem from political motivations, a claim the government vehemently denies.
Spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari from PTI categorized the Supreme Court's endorsement for Khan's medical examination as a beacon of hope for the party.
The party has also declared plans for a nationwide march on September 27, demanding increased access to Khan, expedited hearings in his legal matters, and his release.
Khan's return to prison following a brief hospital assessment may escalate tensions between his supporters and the government, particularly if they perceive the Supreme Court's order was not fully upheld.
