Venezuela Claims US is Staging a Conflict Amid Military Escalation

Venezuela Claims US is Staging a Conflict Amid Military Escalation

Post by : Rameen Ariff

On Friday, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro accused the United States of “staging a conflict” as the military presence in the Caribbean sharply increased. This escalation includes a strike group centered around an aircraft carrier, eight Navy vessels, and ten F-35 stealth jets, aimed at combating drug-trafficking operations in Latin America.

During a broadcast to state media, Maduro criticized the US military escalation, asserting it creates artificial conflict in the region. “They are concocting a new perpetual war; they swore off future interventions, yet here we are with a war that we will thwart,” he declared.

The military operations initiated by President Donald Trump in September have already resulted in assaults on at least 10 vessels, reportedly causing the deaths of over 40 individuals, many of whom were civilians, including local fishermen, raising serious humanitarian concerns.

The Pentagon has defended this deployment as a necessary step to eliminate “narco-terrorists” in the region. As part of these efforts, the U.S. confirmed joint military drills with Trinidad and Tobago, with the USS Gravely destroyer expected to dock in Port of Spain between October 26-30. US Marines will partner with the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force for training exercises near Venezuela's coast.

This military escalation underscores escalating tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela, with Maduro labeling the U.S. campaign as an aggressive maneuver threatening regional security. Experts caution that such a military buildup alongside ongoing strikes may ignite further conflict in Latin America and worsen the humanitarian plight of coastal communities.

The military initiative under Trump is part of a wider strategy to dismantle drug trafficking networks. However, it has drawn international backlash due to its impact on civilians and concerns about overreach in a fraught geopolitical landscape.
