Vanderbilt Seeks Third Consecutive Win with Stellar 3-Point Shooting

Vanderbilt Seeks Third Consecutive Win with Stellar 3-Point Shooting

Post by : Maya Rahman

In a pre-game statement, Vanderbilt's head coach, Mark Byington, emphasized that he doesn't want the team to rely solely on 3-point shots for victories. Nevertheless, their early games have showcased their impressive outside shooting prowess. With a perfect 2-0 record, the Commodores have netted 17 three-pointers against Lipscomb and another 14 against UCF.

This remarkable shooting ability positions Vanderbilt as a formidable force in 3-point shooting for the season. Brimming with confidence, the team will clash with Eastern Kentucky (1-1) on Wednesday night in Nashville, Tennessee. While acknowledging that 3-point shots are an element of their strategy, Coach Byington urges his players to engage in smart basketball and capitalize on game dynamics.

“We emphasize playing the right way and seizing opportunities,” Byington remarked. “When our passing is fluid, we have players capable of making big shots.” His players have taken that message to heart, as evidenced by their scoring 105 points in their first two games—an achievement not seen since 1980. This marks the first time in Vanderbilt's history that they have surpassed 100 points in back-to-back season openers.

In addition to their offensive capabilities, the Commodores demonstrated rigorous defense against UCF, forcing 12 turnovers and converting them into 20 points while permitting just two points from their own errors. This balance between offense and defense has fueled their early success and boosted their confidence for tougher contests ahead.

Senior player Tyler Nickel has emerged as a pivotal contributor, averaging 18.5 points per game. “We move the ball well and our teammates trust one another,” Nickel stated. “This unity will be crucial as we enter conference play and hopefully the postseason.”

Nickel is backed by several teammates also in stellar form. Sophomore guard Tyler Tanner averages 17.5 points per game, while graduate student Duke Miles brings in 15 points, and Tyler Harris adds 14.5. Such statistics clearly indicate that Vanderbilt’s success is a team effort, with scoring depth playing a significant role.

With 31 successful 3-point shots from 67 attempts, their shooting efficiency rates at nearly 46%, making them one of the top college basketball teams for 3-point execution currently. Their offensive rhythm, characterized by quick passing and confident shooting, creates challenges for their opponents to halt.

Vanderbilt’s upcoming opponent, Eastern Kentucky, also features a potent offense, averaging 100.5 points per game and converting 25 of their 68 three-point attempts. After suffering an 89-79 defeat to Western Kentucky, the Colonels aim to bounce back.

Austin Ball, a sophomores forward and pivotal transfer from George Mason, leads Eastern Kentucky with 16.5 points per game. Graduate student Montavious Myrick pitches in another 16 points on average, alongside transfer forward Jalen Cooper’s 14.5 points from Cal State Fullerton.

Given both teams' high-paced offensive styles, Wednesday night promises to be a thrilling, high-scoring encounter. Vanderbilt is eager to maintain its unbeaten streak and showcase its 3-point shooting skill, while Eastern Kentucky is determined to regain its rhythm and momentum after last week's setback.

Coach Byington continues to insist on a team-first mentality. His focus on unselfish play and smart choices has given Vanderbilt an early edge this season. If the Commodores maintain their shooting efficiency while upholding defensive integrity, they could establish themselves as one of the most electrifying teams in the league this year.

Fans in Nashville are eager to witness if the Commodores can once again top the 100-point mark and achieve their third straight win with impressive style.
