Upasana Kamineni Konidela has responded to criticism following her remarks on egg freezing made during a recent event at IIT Hyderabad. She emphasized that her goal was to foster substantial conversations about women’s reproductive options, not to provoke debate.
As reactions unfolded online, Upasana took to X to provide a comprehensive statement, expressing her appreciation for the discussions. “I'm grateful that this dialogue was initiated and thankful for the respectful feedback,” she shared on Wednesday evening.
She stated her intention to further discuss the “pleasures and pressures of privilege.” Upasana also urged people to consider the insights she provided, advocating for increased corporate support for women's workforce involvement.
In a personal “fact check,” she shared her life choices regarding marriage and family. She recounted marrying at 27 for love, opting to freeze her eggs at 29 for health reasons, welcoming her first child at 36, and now expecting twins at 39. Upasana highlighted that both marriage and career hold significant value for her, and her personal timeline is just that—personal.
During her talk at IIT Hyderabad, she portrayed egg freezing as a type of “insurance,” which enables women to make their own decisions regarding marriage and motherhood. Interestingly, she noted that a larger number of men than women expressed interest in marriage, illustrating a shift in societal views in “Progressive India.”
Reactions to her comments have varied; while some medical professionals and working women praised her focus on autonomy and planning, others pointed out the financial barriers many women in India face regarding egg freezing.
Upasana is committed to continuing the discussion, framing egg freezing as one of several options for women navigating biological, professional, and societal expectations.
