ROME/LONDON – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected U.S. pressure to cede territory to Russia, emphasizing Ukraine’s right to retain its land while seeking stronger European backing.
In recent statements, Zelenskyy underscored that Ukraine has no legal or moral obligation to give up any territory. “According to our law, constitution, and international law, we don’t have such a right,” he said, reiterating that Ukraine will not compromise its sovereignty in the ongoing conflict.
Diplomatic Push Across Europe
Zelenskyy’s European tour included high-level meetings with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Pope Leo XIV, and leaders in London. In Rome, discussions focused on advancing the peace process, creating robust security guarantees, and maintaining pressure on Russia to negotiate in good faith.
The Vatican, while maintaining neutrality, emphasized the need for continuing dialogue and urged diplomatic efforts to bring a “just and lasting peace.” Zelenskyy also spoke with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reinforcing Ukraine’s stance against territorial concessions.
Rising Tensions on the Battlefield
Despite diplomatic endeavors, fighting persists on multiple fronts. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched 110 drones overnight, with 24 striking various locations, triggering emergency blackouts nationwide. In response, Ukraine targeted Russian energy facilities, including a liquefied gas terminal at Temryuk port, resulting in significant fires in storage tanks.
The ongoing war has exacerbated humanitarian conditions. Currently, only 65% of the $278 million required for Ukraine’s winter relief initiative has been raised, leaving numerous individuals without heating, financial aid, or crucial services.
U.S. Pressure and Political Debate
Former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Zelenskyy ponder territorial compromises and called for elections even under martial law, suggesting that Russia holds the “upper hand.” Nonetheless, Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s position, seeking security assurances prior to elections and suggesting readiness for a vote within 60 to 90 days once circumstances allow.

As Zelenskyy consolidates European alliances while resisting external pressures, Ukraine remains unwavering in its commitment to defend its sovereignty. The nation continues to navigate the balance between diplomacy and military strength, emphasizing that any peace must uphold its territorial integrity.
