The United Kingdom is on the brink of a significant revelation as a public inquiry prepares to announce its conclusions regarding the tragic death of Dawn Sturgess. She died after inadvertently coming into contact with the lethal Novichok nerve agent in 2018, just months following the assassination attempt on former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.
This incident unfolded in Salisbury, a serene city in southern England, where Sergei and Yulia Skripal were discovered unconscious, victims of a nerve agent spread on the handle of Skripal’s residence. UK authorities subsequently accused Russian military intelligence of orchestrating the attack, a charge Russia has consistently denied.
Four months post-incident, 44-year-old mother of three, Dawn Sturgess, fell prey to this sinister scheme. Her partner discovered a counterfeit perfume bottle believed to be the vehicle for the lethal poison, leading Dawn to unknowingly apply it to her wrists. Tragically, she succumbed shortly thereafter, while her partner survived, albeit severely ill.
British law enforcement has charged three Russian individuals in absentia, purportedly connected to Russia’s GRU intelligence agency. Two of these individuals claimed they were merely tourists visiting Salisbury’s renowned cathedral on Russian television. All three maintain their innocence.
Despite no direct charges resulting from Sturgess’s death, her family has been awaiting clarity on the case for years. The inquiry has scrutinized classified evidence from British intelligence and delved into Skripal’s history as a spy. Currently living in secrecy, Skripal has reiterated his belief that the attack was sanctioned by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This poisoning episode incited one of the most significant diplomatic confrontations between Russia and the West since the Cold War, resulting in the expulsion of numerous Russian diplomats from various countries. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Britain’s unwavering support for Kyiv, relations between the two have further deteriorated.
The forthcoming report aims to illuminate the planning behind the attack, the methods used to smuggle the nerve agent into the UK, and potential oversights that led to innocent lives being affected. The Skripals did not give personal testimony due to safety concerns, and their current location remains undisclosed.
