The United Arab Emirates has taken a significant stride on the global platform as Mohammed Al Mansoori, Under-Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, led the UAE delegation to the third session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). The discussions were held at the organisation's headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, congregating global representatives to contemplate the future of urban development worldwide.
This involvement holds particular importance as it represents the UAE's inaugural participation in the Executive Board proceedings post its election as President of the UN-Habitat General Assembly and membership in the programme’s Executive Board for 2025. This achievement underscores the UAE's enhanced influence and proactive stance in promoting global strategies centred on sustainable urban development. It also accentuates the nation's increasing international prestige in domains tied to urban planning, innovation, and housing solutions.
During the sessions, Al Mansoori stressed that the UAE's presidency of UN-Habitat comes with both significant responsibility and an opportunity for growth. He articulated the UAE's aspirations to bolster its role in shaping the future of cities globally, especially as nations confront rapid population increases, climate-related challenges, and evolving societal needs. Through its leadership, the UAE seeks to foster international collaboration that leads to refined planning, enhanced living conditions, and smarter, more resilient urban areas.
Al Mansoori highlighted the UAE's dedication to advancing innovative concepts and cutting-edge technologies to enhance city operations. He emphasized that innovation would be prioritized to improve housing frameworks, transit systems, and ecological sustainability. By doing this, the UAE aspires to nurture urban landscapes that offer a high quality of life and satisfy the demands of contemporary society.
He further indicated that the UAE will maintain its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing urban development, community needs, and climate action. The country's aim is to ensure its contributions resonate with the New Urban Agenda—an international framework advocating for safe, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable cities.
Throughout the meetings, the UAE delegation engaged in dialogues with global partners, international organizations, and UN bodies to identify methods to enhance cooperation. Al Mansoori outlined plans for the UAE to spearhead and support initiatives that empower nations to formulate superior urban strategies, effectively meet global challenges, and establish long-term resolutions fostering stable, future-ready communities.
He remarked that the UAE’s leadership is resolutely committed to propelling the mission of UN-Habitat by cultivating new partnerships and advocating smart solutions to enhance housing availability, mitigate environmental impact, and bolster social well-being. With its growing expertise in infrastructure development and city planning, the UAE aims to share successful practices with other countries, creating a global framework where urban environments are smarter, more sustainable, and well-prepared for future challenges.
The UAE's robust participation in these discussions reaffirms the nation's vision of emerging as a global benchmark for innovation and urban excellence. As the global community seeks to establish cities that are adaptable, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced, the UAE is positioned to be instrumental in shaping that vision. This includes assisting nations in need, sharing insights, and collaborating with international partners to elevate global progress towards future-ready cities.
Through its active role at UN-Habitat, the UAE continues to affirm its commitment to global collaboration, sustainable solutions, and the creation of urban spaces that cater to future generations' needs. This strategic engagement reflects the UAE's philosophy that enhancing urban landscapes is not merely a developmental objective but an investment in human well-being, environmental stewardship, and global prosperity.
