Samarkand, Uzbekistan – The United Arab Emirates has been elected Vice President of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, underscoring its growing influence in international cultural and educational affairs. The conference, taking place from October 30 to November 13, brings together delegates from 194 member states.
Leading the UAE delegation is Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture and Chair of the UAE National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The UAE’s election highlights its active role in global cultural diplomacy and international cooperation.
During the session, UNESCO also announced the inclusion of the late Emirati poet Ahmed Bin Sulayem and the United Arab Emirates University in its 2026–2027 Anniversaries Programme. This recognition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the poet’s passing and the establishment of the UAE’s first university in 1976.
Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi emphasized the UAE’s commitment to UNESCO’s mission in education, culture, and science. He also highlighted the country’s collaboration on heritage restoration initiatives, including the notable 'Revive the Spirit of Mosul' project, showcasing the UAE’s approach to post-conflict recovery and cultural preservation.
Currently chairing the Arab Group at UNESCO, the UAE continues to strengthen its position as a trusted partner in international cultural and educational platforms. Its Vice Presidency at the General Conference further reflects the nation’s dedication to fostering global dialogue and protecting heritage worldwide.
