Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes Taiwan: Over 8,300 Residents Evacuated

Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes Taiwan: Over 8,300 Residents Evacuated

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Taiwan is currently enduring significant weather challenges as Typhoon Fung-wong made landfall on Wednesday, unleashing heavy rains and severe flooding, particularly across the eastern regions. Authorities have evacuated upwards of 8,300 individuals from areas such as Yilan and Hualien counties, where water levels have risen to neck-high in several locations.

The typhoon, now notably weakened after impacting the Philippines and resulting in 27 fatalities, has caused widespread disruption. Numerous schools and businesses in southern Taiwan were forced to close, with at least 51 individuals reported injured.

Pictures emerging from the affected regions, especially in the rural eastern Yilan county, showcase inundated streets and submerged residences. In the town of Suao, local fisherman Hung Chun-yi described how floodwaters quickly rose to 60 cm on his home's first floor, stating, “The rain came so heavy and fast that the drainage couldn’t cope.”

Local emergency services have been actively managing evacuation efforts, prioritizing areas where heavy monsoon rains merged with the typhoon's moisture to amplify flooding. Dongshan town in Yilan recorded an astonishing 794 mm of rain in just one day on Tuesday, marking the extreme weather conditions.

While eastern Taiwan is facing considerable destruction, northern regions, including Hsinchu—the site of TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip manufacturer—remain relatively unscathed by Fung-wong’s trajectory.

Meteorologists are forecasting that Fung-wong will continue its path toward southern Taiwan before drifting into the Pacific Ocean, gradually losing its intensity. This event follows a September typhoon that previously caused deadly floods in Hualien, highlighting the region's susceptibility to late tropical storms.

Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and adhere to established safety practices as cleanup and rescue operations progress in the most affected zones.
