Over the weekend, Typhoon Fung-wong battered the northern Philippines, resulting in at least eight fatalities and displacing over 1.4 million individuals. The storm arrived while the nation was still reeling from the impact of Typhoon Kalmaegi, leading to significant flooding, landslides, and power disruptions across various provinces.
Known locally as Uwan, Fung-wong made landfall in Aurora province as a super typhoon, boasting sustained winds of 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts up to 230 kph (143 mph). Though the storm lost strength as it moved inland, heavy rains continued to pose threats to northern regions, including Metro Manila.
Authorities reported multiple casualties from landslides and inundated areas. A drowning incident in Catanduanes claimed one life, while a house collapse in Catbalogan city resulted in another. In Nueva Vizcaya, three children lost their lives due to separate landslides, and one elderly resident perished in a mudslide in Barlig, Mountain Province. Additionally, a landslide in Lubuagan, Kalinga province, took two villagers’ lives and left two more unaccounted for.
Prior to the typhoon’s arrival, more than 1.4 million individuals sought safety in emergency shelters or with family members, with approximately 318,000 still in evacuation centers by Monday. Flooding impacted at least 132 villages, with some residents stranded on rooftops, while landslides damaged numerous homes and roadways.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency due to the destruction from Typhoon Kalmaegi and the expected effects of Fung-wong. Schools and government offices were shuttered, and travel faced severe challenges with the cancellation of over 325 domestic and 61 international flights, leaving more than 6,600 travelers stranded at ports.
As the storm moves towards Taiwan, officials caution that heavy rainfall remains a threat. Rescue efforts, relief operations, and disaster response teams are actively working to assist impacted communities, restore power, and clear blocked routes.
The Philippines is susceptible to about 20 typhoons each year, along with various natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic activities. The arrival of Fung-wong emphasizes the critical importance of disaster preparedness and effective emergency response strategies.
