Hanoi: Typhoon Bualoi struck Vietnam’s northern and central coast on Monday, leaving at least 13 people dead and 46 injured, officials said. The storm brought heavy rains and strong winds, damaging homes, flooding roads, and disrupting power lines.
The typhoon weakened into a depression as it moved toward Laos after making landfall early Monday. Waves up to eight meters battered the coast, and several fishermen went missing when their boats were swept away near Quang Tri province. Another fishing boat also lost contact.
Authorities evacuated over 28,500 people ahead of the typhoon, and flights at four airports in central Vietnam were delayed or cancelled. In Ninh Binh province, strong winds caused nine deaths and seven injuries. One person drowned in Hue city, while a falling tree killed another in Thanh Hoa province.
More than 44,000 homes were damaged, and nearly 14,800 acres of rice and other crops were flooded. The government said there was no major damage to industrial properties, including factories operated by Foxconn, Formosa Plastics, Luxshare, and Vinfast.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered the defence and public security ministries to deploy troops and police to help communities recover from the storm. Heavy rains, which started on Saturday, raised water levels in rivers and reservoirs across several provinces, prompting warnings of severe floods and landslides.
Authorities forecast up to 500 mm of rain in some areas between Sunday night and Tuesday. With its long coastline along the South China Sea, Vietnam is frequently affected by typhoons, many forming east of the Philippines, where Bualoi recently killed at least 10 people.
